A2 Desi Cow Ghee: How to Check What You're Buying

By ORO FOODS™ kitchen · 18 October 2026 · 3 min read

A2 desi cow ghee is now sold everywhere, from kirana shelves to big apps, and prices vary a lot. So how do you tell what you are actually buying? No home test can prove what is inside a jar, but you can learn a lot from the label, the seller and the ghee itself.

Here is a practical checklist we use ourselves at ORO FOODS™ in Solapur.

1. Read the label properly

  • "A2" should be specific. It refers to the milk of desi cow breeds. A good label tells you the source (cow breed or region) and the maker, not just a big "A2" in the corner.
  • FSSAI licence number. Every packed food sold in India must show it. No number, no purchase.
  • Batch number and packed date. Ghee keeps for months, but you still want to know when your jar was made. You can check any ORO batch on our batch check page.
  • One ingredient. The ingredient list for ghee should simply say ghee (from cow milk). Watch for added flavours or "blended" wording.

2. Ask how it is made

Traditional ghee is often made from curd: the curd is churned into butter (makhan), and the butter is slowly heated into ghee. Many brands call this the bilona method. Others make ghee from cream. Both are legal; what matters is that the seller tells you clearly which one you are buying, so you can compare fairly.

3. Look, smell and taste

  • Colour: cow ghee is usually light yellow to golden. The colour changes with the season and the cows' feed, so a little difference between batches is normal.
  • Texture: at room temperature, good ghee often sets with a slightly grainy texture.
  • Smell: it should smell nutty and fresh, never sour or stale.

These are signs of care, not proof of what is in the jar. Be careful with "home tests" on social media (freezing it, melting it on your palm, and so on): they cannot tell you reliably what a jar contains. If you need certainty, ask the seller for a lab report for the batch.

4. Check how fresh it is

Ghee that sits in a warehouse for months is still safe to eat, but fresh ghee tastes better. Ask how long ago your jar was made.

At ORO FOODS™ we make our A2 Desi Cow Ghee only after you order, so it leaves Solapur 6 to 7 days after you buy. Every jar has a batch number.

5. Compare prices fairly

Compare ghee by weight, not by jar, and include the delivery charge. A cheaper jar that is half the size, or that adds a big delivery charge, is not cheaper at all. If you use ghee every month, a subscription usually works out better: with our Subscribe & save you save on every box, delivery is free, and you can skip or pause any time.

Ghee in our dry fruit mixes

Our Masala Dry Fruit Mix is roasted in A2 cow ghee. If you buy roasted snacks, the same label habits apply: see what to look for in roasted dry fruits, and what to check before you buy a dry fruits mix online.

Ordering for Diwali?

Because it is made to order, ghee needs a few more days than our snacks. To have it before Diwali, order by 23 October for the rest of India, 26 October for Maharashtra, or 28 October for Solapur.

A short checklist to keep

1. FSSAI licence number on the label. 2. Batch number and packed date. 3. Ghee as the only ingredient. 4. A clear answer on how it is made. 5. Fresh, nutty smell and a natural golden colour. 6. A fair comparison by weight, including delivery.

In short

Read the label, ask how it is made, trust your nose and eyes, and buy from someone who tells you when your jar was made. Know what you eat.
